Executive Summary: Houston Flooring Comparison
On a Houston slab, tile and luxury vinyl plank handle water and humidity best, engineered wood fits dry rooms once the slab tests dry, and laminate belongs in dry bedrooms and living areas.
Typical Houston-area installed ranges (estimates): LVP $4 to $9, laminate $5 to $10, tile $7 to $18, engineered wood $6 to $14 and solid wood $8 to $20 per sq ft. Installs run an estimated 2 to 4 days for LVP, 4 to 6 for tile and 4 to 8 for wood.
Every slab gets a moisture reading and a 10-foot straightedge check first. An out-of-flat slab must be leveled before install, and Henry Contractor does not offer slab leveling.
How Each Floor Handles Houston Conditions
| Floor | Humidity | After a flood | On a slab | Installed (estimate) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Luxury vinyl plank | SPC and WPC cores do not swell | Planks can be lifted and reused once the slab dries | Floating click-lock or full glue-down over a flat, tested slab | $4 to $9 per sq ft |
| Tile | No effect on porcelain or ceramic | Tile survives; grout and membrane get checked | Set on an uncoupling membrane so slab cracks do not crack the tile | $7 to $18 per sq ft |
| Engineered wood | Needs acclimation and indoor RH of 35 to 55% | Boards often cup and need replacing | Glue-down with moisture-barrier adhesive after an in-slab test | $6 to $14 per sq ft |
| Laminate | Core swells where water sits on edges | Usually replaced | Floats over moisture-barrier underlayment with a 1/4-inch gap | $5 to $10 per sq ft |
Prices are typical Houston-area installed ranges. Removing old flooring adds about $1 to $2.50 per sq ft (estimate).

Test the Slab First
A moisture reading and a straightedge check on your slab decide which floors are safe to install. Both results go on your written estimate.
The Choices Inside Vinyl Plank and Wood
SPC has a rigid stone-plastic core that resists dents. WPC has a thicker, softer core that feels warmer underfoot. Both are waterproof planks.
Plank wear layers come in 12, 20 and 28 mil. Traffic lanes in kitchens, halls and rentals wear through first, so those rooms get the thicker layers.
Engineered wood glues to a tested slab with a moisture-barrier adhesive. Solid hardwood costs more ($8 to $20+ per sq ft, estimate) and needs 3 to 5 days of on-site acclimation with the HVAC running.
What Every Floor Needs Before Install
- A slab moisture reading; a damp reading adds a moisture barrier
- A 10-foot straightedge flatness check; an out-of-flat slab must be leveled first, which we do not offer
- Asbestos testing before removing pre-1980s vinyl tile or cutback adhesive
- Removal of old flooring at about $1 to $2.50 per sq ft (estimate)
- 3 to 5 days of acclimation for wood, with the HVAC running

Frequently Asked Questions
The short answer is tile or luxury vinyl plank anywhere water is likely, such as kitchens, baths and laundry rooms, and engineered wood, laminate or LVP in dry bedrooms and living areas. A slab moisture reading decides whether wood is an option at all.
Many Houston homes mix two floors: tile in the wet rooms and plank everywhere else, with a transition at each doorway.
The short answer is the core. SPC uses a rigid stone-plastic core that resists dents, while WPC uses a thicker, softer core that feels warmer underfoot. Both cores are waterproof, and both float or glue down over a flat, moisture-tested slab.
SPC is the usual pick for rentals and busy kitchens.
The short answer is 20 mil or more for kitchens, hallways and rental units, where traffic lanes wear through first, and 12 mil for lightly used bedrooms. The wear layer is the clear top film, so a thicker one costs more but holds its look longer.
Premium waterproof planks run about $6 to $15 per sq ft installed, against $4 to $9 for entry planks (Houston-area estimates).
